Dan’s top tips for growing vegetables from seed

Z

Air Pockets

Avoid air pockets in the compost – they can hinder seedling growth. Sieve it or rub it between your hands to remove large particles. If possible, use slightly damp compost and gently tap the pot or press it down to ensure even distribution.

Z

How deep do I plant?

As a rule of thumb, plant seeds at a depth of 2-3 times the size of the seed. But always check the packet instructions!

Z

Which way up?

There’s lots of advice about which way to plant larger seeds such as beans or courgettes – but actually it doesn’t really matter!

Z

What compost?

You can plant most seeds in multipurpose compost. For more information about when you might need specialised seed and cutting compost visit the Toolkit compost and composting page.

Z

Wonky carrots!

Always sow root crops (carrots, radishes, parsnips etc) directly where they’ll grow. If you transplant them, they tend to fork and distort – you’ll have wonky carrots! Another cause of wonky carrots is growing in manure.
